firsts

first of all, let me go back and elaborate on the cockroach that was mentioned in my previous post. so i spotted the evil bastard in my bathroom when i flipped the light on. by the time i convinced myself that i should squish him, he ran under the washing machine and i lost my chance. i have no idea why, but i kept randomly going into the bathroom and flipping on the light hoping to catch him. by 11pm i hadn't seen him, so i figured i had him good and scared hiding like a sissy under the washing machine. WRONG. i walk into my bedroom and he was climbing on my wall above my bed. so GROSS! i mean would you want this hovering above you all night?

so i did what any normal girl would do: flip out, and proceed to stand on a chair with a broom swatting at it. after chasing it around my room for 10 min, i got him about face-level on the wall where i was going to trap him under a glass. yeah, i was too slow and missed and he flew straight at my face. i screamed and dropped to the floor (shameful, but true), and when i got up i saw the bastard was on my pillow! so i did my best indian war cry (kidding. wish i would've though. it makes the story sound way more bad ass) and trapped him under the glass. the thought of squishing him made me sick, so i settled on flushing him. but i was paranoid that he wouldn't go down, so i mightve flushed my toilet like 20x lol. that was a long bug story, but it was highly traumatic for me. i flinched for the rest of the night whenever something touched me haha.

this morning i woke up and my first email was from shane telling me that he booked his ticket to come visit me! best news EVER to wake up to!! he'll be here on feb 10th, so i've started an official countdown and have 28 days/687 hrs till i see his handsome face

...is it feb 10th yet?

today is the first day we've hit 35° C since ive been here. i had to google aka translate wtf that meant in fahrenheit, turns out its 95°. it feels a lot hotter than that though, probably because of how close we are to the ocean, and i'm told its only going to get hotter. normally im not one to bitch about the heat, but since i live in an old house that doesn't have a/c, i'm slightly hating life. thank god there are two stand-up fans (to push around the hot air lol). im currently planted right in front of one.

i had some firsts with transportation yesterday and today. yesterday i took the bus home from work. my sweet coworker suzanne showed me the ropes. yes, i had to be shown by a 60 yr old lady how to buy my bus ticket, and what stop to get off at.....which was slightly humbling since i have a masters degree and all. yeah turns out that smart people are still ra-tarded sometimes. but im glad that i know how it works since the bus costs $1.80 one way, and a cab costs $12.50 one way. anyway, this morning i decided to skip the bus and try out the bike. according to google (yes, google has become my best friend since moving here) my work was 3.6 km away. so i strapped on my nerdy helmet and backpack and peddled my way to work. there was one monster hill that kicked my butt

this photo makes it look super easy and flat. but i SWEAR it was a hill. it has to be a hill. otherwise im just really out of shape lol.....

did a bit of neighborhood exploring this afternoon and rode south on the ole bike. so much fun seeing all the houses and the people out and about. i could smell the ocean, so i followed my nose and ended up at south beach. it was such a nice spot that i plopped down and basked in the evening. so beautiful.

i wore a white shirt today and was hoping to not spill anything on it, which would be a first (since i always stain EVERY white shirt i own). yeah, its 9:10pm and i count: 1 coffee stain, 2 unknown stains that might be bugs from my bike riding?, and 3 spots from when i was shoving chocolate in my face about 5 min ago. looks like i failed. damn.

my first australian roomie arrives tomorrow from ireland. im kind of excited to have someone else in the house to talk with and battle bugs with. hopefully she's cool. im thinking good thoughts :)

i tried my first aussie biscuit today. its like a really bland plain cookie. i left them on my counter. i went into the kitchen just now and found another GD cockroach...eating my bland biscuits! i officially LOATHE cockroaches.

ive also had a few word firsts. today at work instead of saying "oh shit" when something goes wrong, i definitely heard a coworker say "oh crumbs". lol wtf? it made me giggle. i've also heard "chockers". i asked emma what it meant, and she said, "you know, chock as a block"...which obviously i didnt know, and mustve had a blank look on my face, because she had to elaborate futher and tell me it meant she was full from eating. i found a website online of aussie slang for when i've been verbally gobsmacked.

still missing everyone at home. the distance is what it is, but the time change keeps throwing me for a loop. i cant just pick up my phone after work and call my dad or mom to chat...well, i probably could, but they'd be bugged getting a call from me at 3am lol. i'd really love to snuggle up to this guy right now and give him kisses behind his ears

and lastly, i received my first package in the mail today! thanks shaner (I LOVE IT!)!

:)
